With 519 stores Continente is one of the largest supermarket chains in Portugal. The markets are similar in size to the hypermarkets Walmart in the US. In addition to a large number of products of the own brand of the same name, Continente also stocks some items from rather rarely found brands. What we also noticed: Non-dairy milk is often reduced here! The price of the cheapest soy milk is about 60 cents per liter during promotion.

Vegan Products at Apolónia in Portugal
The Portuguese supermarket chain Apolónia has only 3 stores, all of which are located in the Algarve: in Almancil, Galé (Albufeira) and Lagoa (Carvoeiro). The modern, almost noble-looking supermarkets stock primarily international and generally more expensive products. No wonder that brands such as The Vegetarian Butcher, Amy’s, Fry’s, Quorn and The Coconut Collaborative can be found here. For a vegan basic equipment, we’d shop elsewhere. But if you want to try new products, which aren’t available everywhere, this is the place for you!

Vegan Products at Aldi in Portugal
We were really surprised by the vegan offer at Aldi in Portugal. Here you get not only plant milk and bread spreads, but also (smoked) tofu, lots of different burger patties, vegan sausages, all sorts of sweets and even vegan currywurst in a jar! Even fancy stuff like açaí, protein powder, coconut oil and goji berries can be found here. If you’re lucky, you’ll actually get even more vegan products in a veggie promotion week.

Elvas: Largest Bulwark Fortifications in the World
Near the Spanish border, Elvas is home to the world’s largest preserved bastion fortifications. Together with the entire historic center, these have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. After Elvas was developed as a strategic point to one of the major strongholds of the country, the town was repeatedly the scene of the Restoration War, which broke out as a result of the revolution of 1640. Évora: Megalithic Stone Circles and Roman Temples
The historic center of Évora has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1986. The capital of the south-central region of Alentejo in Portugal also belongs to the Most Ancient European Towns Network founded in 1994. In addition to Roman remnants, the Almendres Cromlech, whose age is estimated at about 5000 to 6000 years, is located very close by. Vegan at IKEA
IKEA: a company that, according to its own statements, cares about sustainability. This includes providing an environmentally friendly, healthy and affordable food offer. Therefore, the furniture giant from Sweden introduced already in 2015 a vegan version of the popular Köttbullar. In August of 2018, followed a vegan hot dog called Veggie Hot Dog. And for summer 2019, the Swedish chain has already announced on Instagram to offer a vegan soft ice cream, which is already being tested in some stores.
