Vegan in Portugal? That’s pretty easy, as we already showed you in our Vegan Guides for Lisbon and the Algarve. But not only restaurants and cafes, also supermarkets offer many plant-based options. For example, there’s a wide selection of non-dairy milk in almost every Portuguese supermarket. Here, the cheapest liter of soy milk often costs only 60 to 80 cents. Vegan cheese, sausages, cookies, ice cream and protein powder are also available in some stores. Continue reading “Vegan Stuff in a Supermarket in Portugal”
Vegan Products at Spar in Portugal
Admittedly, we didn’t expect a large selection of vegan products at Spar right from the start. We were all the happier to find even in the smallest Spar five different plant milk varieties, animal-free chocolate crunchy cereal and even the vegan and gluten-free Cornetto ice cream. Also if you are looking for vegan cookies, you will definitely find something here. So yes, a full week’s shopping may be difficult here. But if you are only looking for something to eat or a sweet snack, a quick visit to the next Spar is definitely enough.

Vegan Products at Pingo Doce in Portugal
Pingo Doce (English: “sweet drop”) is the second largest supermarket chain in Portugal after Minipreço. Here you’ll find not only meat alternatives, vegan cookies and cereals, but also vegan “milk” products such as plant milk, yogurt, cream and ice cream. Pingo Doce can’t compete with the plant-based selection of the big stores like Jumbo, Intermarché, E.Leclerc and Continente though. However, the chain seems motivated, to produce and sell very cheap vegan products such as vanilla ice cream or yoghurt drinks by the store brand.

Vegan Products at Lidl in Portugal
Lidl in Portugal has a wide range of non-dairy milk for a discount store. You can even find soy cream from the store brand and various quinoa and bulgur salads. There is no shortage of hummus variations and vegan cookies either. The most worthwhile shopping, however, is during a veggie promotion week: Then you can find something even more extraordinary, such as vegan milk ice cream or chocolate spread.

Vegan Products at Jumbo in Portugal
Jumbo is considered the cheapest supermarket in Portugal. If you know the French department store chain Auchan, some products at Jumbo might be familiar to you, since this supermarket belongs to the Auchan group. Just like Auchan in France or Alcampo in Spain, Jumbo stores are huge and can be compared with a Walmart or Tesco. In other words, you can basically find almost everything here, including a larger selection of vegan cheese, cold cuts and sausage. Fruit and vegetables are also extremely cheap here. Vegan Products at Continente in Portugal
With 519 stores Continente is one of the largest supermarket chains in Portugal. The markets are similar in size to the hypermarkets Walmart in the US. In addition to a large number of products of the own brand of the same name, Continente also stocks some items from rather rarely found brands. What we also noticed: Non-dairy milk is often reduced here! The price of the cheapest soy milk is about 60 cents per liter during promotion.

Vegan Products at Apolónia in Portugal
The Portuguese supermarket chain Apolónia has only 3 stores, all of which are located in the Algarve: in Almancil, Galé (Albufeira) and Lagoa (Carvoeiro). The modern, almost noble-looking supermarkets stock primarily international and generally more expensive products. No wonder that brands such as The Vegetarian Butcher, Amy’s, Fry’s, Quorn and The Coconut Collaborative can be found here. For a vegan basic equipment, we’d shop elsewhere. But if you want to try new products, which aren’t available everywhere, this is the place for you!

Vegan Products at Aldi in Portugal
We were really surprised by the vegan offer at Aldi in Portugal. Here you get not only plant milk and bread spreads, but also (smoked) tofu, lots of different burger patties, vegan sausages, all sorts of sweets and even vegan currywurst in a jar! Even fancy stuff like açaí, protein powder, coconut oil and goji berries can be found here. If you’re lucky, you’ll actually get even more vegan products in a veggie promotion week.
